Double paned windows are made from layers of glass, literally a double set of glass panes. The space between them is devoid of air and vacuum sealed. The seal around the panes can weaken over time and once that happens, air can leak between them. Age and use both contribute to the loss of seal and heat escape can occur. The vacuum on the pane cannot be replaced and homeowners should replace the entire window in order to get a complete seal again.
